Stamp of the Day

From The July 2009 Collector's Series Sale - Spink Shreves Galleries - July 22-23, 2009

Lot 4 - #11X4, 5c Black on gray lilac, Type III, position 5, four large margins, fresh color and a strong detailed impression, single vertical pen-stroke cancel, extremely fine. The rartiy of the Five Cent St. Louis Bear on Gray lilac paper is due to the fact that the layout of the Second State impressions had only one 5c stamp in the subject of six (at position 5), with three 10c and two 20c. Only one St. Louis Bear stamp is rarer, that being the 20c on greenish paper. This example, with its four large margins and being completely sound, is one of the finest of the minute number known.A magnificent classic stamp of extraordinary beauty and rarity. Accompanied by a 1985 PF certificate; ex-Twigg-Smith.....CV. $55,000.00
